Šubmar Lake
Šumbar complex consists in several larger lakes, and for fishing the most important are Veliki Bajer, Desni or Dugi Bajer and Eko Lake. Those tree water jewels attract fishermen, and woods around it give it a special atmosphere and calms modern angler's soul. The biggest carp couth on this water was 25 kg heavy, and the biggest amur 25.5 kg. The biggest pike had 13 kg, and the biggest catfish 76 kg. Often here you can catch perches that weight more than 2 kg, which are a big attraction for anglers from Zagreb and surroundings. Šumbar is the right place for curing a modern man from everyday stress, worries and rush.
Veliki Bajer
This lake is in shape of irregular rectangle, long cca 300 X 400 meters, with several larger bays and islands. Its depth varies from 1 to 7 meters, and its bottom is filled with rests of trees and branches that ones grew from the bottom. Water is greenish in colour, and its limpidity varies depending on a season and temperature. It is around 30 years old, and besides carp, amur, catfish, pike and perch, it is rich in white fish. You can fish there with day's or year's licence from SFC "Korana" Before fishing, it is obligatory to contact a volunteer guard, where you can choose and announce the place. It is allowed to come to the water with the car, night fishing, and fishing wit tree fishing equipments. All carps and amurs regardless of size and with obligatory use of guardian-net must be released. Catching of other species is allowed in quantity and measure prescribed by the Ministry and the Club. It is allowed to camp by the water during the fishing, but it is forbidden making fire, throwing the garbage or destruction of herbs. It also forbidden to enter the water for feeding or anything else connected with fishing. When leaving the water you must contact a guard, report and show the fish, and, if needed, allow your vehicle to be examined.
Desni Bajer
It is 500 m long and about 100 m wide. Its depth varies from 1 m by the cost to 6-7 m in the middle. Its bottom is clayey, uneven and filled with foundered trees that used to grow from its bottom. It is about 20 years old; and has all the fish species that you can find in the Veliko jezero. Fishing is on the same regime as on Veliko jezero, except that it is allowed to take away smaller carps and amurs, if respecting measures, close season and quantity of fish per day. Carps and amurs bigger than 8 kg must be returned unharmed in Veliki Bajer.
Eko Lake
It is in form of irregular rectangle, about 100 m in width and 200 m in length. Its depth is evenly 3.5 - 4 m. Its bottom is clayey, covered in silt. The lake is the oldest in the group, dates from the fifties it is rich in carps and amurs and turned into commercial fish-pond.
The biggest lake is also the most beautiful one. The nature around it - old oak-wood, the swamp of Talijanski bajer, and the great amount of different plant and animal life are all very calming. It is also the richest in big carps and amurs. It is so thanks to the "catch and release" policy, witch means that all carps an amurs regardless of size must be returned unharmed into the water. Besides that, it is obligatory to use cushions to release the fish from the hook, and gentle net with the smallest mash in case of big fish caught during the night for purpose of taking photos. Because all fish must be returned in the water, you should be careful to hurt them as less as possible, so that they live longer and grew bigger. Cushin serves to soothe the hit on the ground and to prevent the hurting of the fish, and gentle nets to prevent taking off the slime and scale and damage to the immunological system.
Kupa
Kupa is without any doubt the most famous Karlovac river, green, seductive and filled with fish. The Club manages its left shore, from the village Levkušje to the mouth of river Dobra, and from there it's both shores. You can find good places for catching pikes, white fish, catfish and perch all the way trough villages Gornje Pokupje, Mahično, Donje Pokupje, Novaki, Hrnetić to Drežnik and Karlovac.
In the town, between the bridges every winter big shoals of white fish gathers, so that these famous "winter quarters" are permanent gathering place for lovers of angling during the coldest months.
Little further, by city canal outlet, there is second big gathering place of all kinds of with fish and catfish that is active in other part of the year when fish leaves it's winter quarters.
Kupa down the flow from Karlovac is rich in carp, pike and catfish, and you can also find perch. Good fishing positions are by the villages of Gradac, Vodostaj, Donje Mekušje, Pokupski Kobilć, Brodani, Rečica, Luka Pokupska, Zamršje, Slunjska and Banska Selnica, Blatnica, Koritinja and Šišljavic. Lower border goes to the mouth of old Kupčina channel and further by the right shore to Banski Kovačevci.
You can catch white fish all year long, in spring it is pike time again and in summer you can find catfish and carp. Good way to catch the catfish is "blinking" and waiting on the bottom. People catch carps by waiting on the bottom, and it is advisable do feed him a little couple of days before fishing. Fall is reserved for the pike and carp. You can catch pike most of the winter, usually "live", until the spawning-time. On the beginning of the year, in second part of the winter, it is extremely popular fishing for catfish in winter quarters. Although it is sometimes really hard to find bates (worms) in cold, and even harder to find and catch the catfish, real fishermen can't be stopped, not even by strong winter. Fishing on Kupa is possible from the shore, but is much better from the boat, because in that way you have the opportunity to pick the best positions for fishing that often you can't reach from the shore.
Korana
One of the most beautiful rivers in Croatia, clean and clear, blue-green in colour. There is fewer fish than in Kupa, but fishing in it is indescribable pleasure. The Club manages its flow from the village Dvorište (both shores) all the way to Koranjsko Selo, than by the right shore to the village Velemerić and the mouth of the river Radonja, further on both shores to the village Radočaj, than the right shore to the village Goljaki and both shores to the mouth of Korana in Kupa.
Korana is rich in white fish and pike all the way. You can also find some catfish, while in the town you can catch nice tench and carp.
You can catch the white fish all year long, in winter in winter quarters, and in summer on cascades of which this river is full. Fishing on cascades in summer is a special pleasure, you can fish on "herbs", algae that you can take from the cascade and let in the stream.
The spring is good for the pike, because it is hungry when it leaves the spawn, and later for the tench, that one catches early in the morning on worms. It is also nice to fish for the barbel and bolen in spawn-time of cyprinid. Than the big shoals of these fish gather in torrent under the cascade , and bolens and barbels come to feast. One clasps a fish on a hook for its mouth, and releases it in the torrent. Summer and spring are good for chubs. Fishing is especially good in time when cherries mature. In summer, during the night, you can wait for catfish. Although they are not very big (most often 1 or 2 kg), to spent the night on the river in the boat is a special experience and pleasure for the true angler. Fall and winter are on Korana time for pike. Pikes of Korana are famous for their size, and almost every year someone catches a piece that is almost 10 kg heavy. Especially favourable time is when waters are turbid and high, because the pike enters flooded fields in search of small fish and it is easy to catch it with live fish.
Mrežnica
The Karlovac Fishermen Club manages both shores of the river Mrežnica from the cascade in Mrzlo Polje, to the mouth of river in Korana. This part of the river is very attractive, although little wild. In that part of current there is couple of islands that cut the river in several smaller currents. The whole shore is covered in willows, filled with rapids and shallow parts, so you must have some adventurous spirit to cross it in boat, mustn't be afraid to step into the water and be prepared to drag the boat for 20 meters or so.
It is rich in all kinds of white fish and pike, and there is also some catfish and carp. Near the bridge in Mostanje, on the left, is situated Zatoka, old dead channel known for long time as a good place for pike and tench. Near the bridge almost every winter there are big winter quarters of white fish, and although the shore is a little inaccessible, you can sale nicely.
Dobra
Small, clear and clean. The part belonging to Karlovac is from the village Bukovje Netreticko to the mouth of Mrežnica in Kupa. For most of the way it is a bit faster and shallower, so it is good for fishing for white fish. You can also catch some pike when waters are high and turbid. Atmosphere on the water is very pleasant, and there's rarely a rush so if you prefer picnic in nature, with swimming and barbecue, don't hesitate o visit it.
Best time for white fish is the winter. You have to find the winter quarters and half of the job is already done, while best summer locations are cascades. In both cases good bate, besides worms, is also herb from the cascade, alga cladofora.
